An Osteometric Evaluation of the Jugular Foramen International Journal of Morphology
Ishwarkumar,S; Naidoo,N; Lazarus,L; Pillay,P; Satyapal,K. S.
The jugular foramina (JF) are bilateral openings situated between the lateral part of the occipital bone and the petrous part of the temporal bones in the human skull. It is a bony canal transmitting neurovascular structures from the posterior cranial fossa through the base of the skull to the carotid space. Since the JF depicts variations in shape, size, height and volume between different racial and gender groups, along with distinctive differences in laterality from its intracranial to extracranial openings, knowledge of the JF may be necessary to understand intracranial pathologies. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphometric measurements of the jugular foramen. Various morphometric parameters of the JF and its relation to...

An Osteometric Evaluation of the Mandibular Condyle in a Black KwaZulu-Natal Population International Journal of Morphology
Ishwarkumar,S; Pillay,P; DeGama,B. Z; Satyapal,K. S.
The mandibular condyle is the rounded protuberance that articulates with the mandibular fossa to form the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The shape of the mandibular condyle may be classified according to five basic shapes viz. flattened, convex, angled, rounded and concave. Previous research indicated that variation in the shape and size of the mandibular condyle, exists and that population-specific differences may also occur. This study aimed to document the shapes and size of the mandibular condyle and determine their relationship with regard to sex, age and race (if any). The morphometric and morphological parameters of the mandibular condyle were measured and assessed in 54 dry mandible specimens (n= 108). The Wedel et al. (1978) classification scheme...

Osteometry and Morphology of the Human Fibula: A South African Study International Journal of Morphology
Naidoo,N; Ishwarkumar,S; Lazarus,L; Pillay,P; Satyapal,K. S.
Recent studies have regarded the fibula flap as the benchmark for the reconstruction and treatment of compound wounds and lesions. Owing to its postero-lateral location within the leg, the application of the fibula flap is deemed aesthetically advantageous as the donor scar can be easily hidden. Since the fibula is anatomically characterized by a shaft and two extremities, this study aimed to investigate the nutrient foramen morphology and the relative fibular osteometry. Osteometric and morphological evaluation of 104 dry human fibulae, representing male and female individuals of the Black and Caucasian population groups that are native to South Africa, were conducted (Age range: 15 81 years old). The presence of single, double and six nutrient foramina...

Sex Determination Using Morphometric and Morphological Dimensions of the Clavicle within the KwaZulu-Natal Population International Journal of Morphology
Ishwarkumar,S; Pillay,P; Haffajee,M. R; Rennie,C.
Sex determination plays an essential role in forensic anthropology in the identification of an individual from skeletal remains. The aim of the study was to determine sex of an individual using the clavicle in a KwaZulu-Natal population. Various morphometric and morphological parameters were measured using 100 clavicles of known sex (66 male and 34 female) and age (range 2595 years). The mean maximum length, mid-shaft circumference and maximum breadth of the sternal and acromial ends of the male clavicles were greater in females. However, the mean medial curve of the clavicle was greater in females than in males on both sides, and on the right side the female clavicles also had a greater mean lateral curve than the males. The maximum length and mid-shaft...

The Anatomy of the Plantar Arterial Arch International Journal of Morphology
Kalicharan,A; Pillay,P; Rennie,C; Haffajee,M. R.
The plantar arterial arch provides the dominant vascular supply to the digits of the foot, with variability in length, shape, and dominant blood supply from the contributing arteries. According to the standard definition, the plantar arterial arch is formed from the continuation of the lateral plantar artery and the anastomoses between the deep branch of dorsalis pedis artery. In this study, 40 adult feet were dissected and the plantar arch with variations in shape and arterial supply was observed. The standard description of the plantar arch was observed in 55% of the specimens with variations present in 45%. Variations in terms of shape were classified into three types: Type A (10%): plantar arterial arch formed a sharp irregular curve; type B (60%):...

The Ansa Cervicalis in Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Pillay,P; Partab,P; Lazarus,L; Satyapal,K. S.
The formation of ansa cervicalis (AC) is somewhat complex with both its course and location along the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein (IJV) varying. The aim of the study was to document the anatomy, formation and variations of AC. Forty fetuses (gestational age: 15 to 28 weeks) were obtained from the Department of Clinical Anatomy, Westville Campus, UKZN. A detailed micro-dissection of the posterior triangle of the neck and AC were completed using standard micro-dissecting instruments. Results of the formation of AC, its relationship to IJV and variations were recorded. The superior root was identified as a long willowy nerve that branched from the hypoglossal nerve, descended on the carotid sheath, anterior to the common carotid artery and...

The Common Fibular Nerve (and its Branches) in Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Chetty,D; Pillay,P; Lazarus,L; Satyapal,K. S.
The common fibular nerve (CFN), is a branch of the sciatic nerve (SN) that exits the popliteal fossa and is located at the tuberculum of the fibula. At the tuberculum of the fibula, the CFN bifurcates into deep (DFN) and superficial (SFN) fibular nerves. Forty fetuses were micro-dissected to (i) describe the course of the CFN in relation to the tuberculum and neck of the fibula in fetuses; (ii) describe the branches, distribution and relation of the DFN and SFN to muscles within the anterolateral compartment of the leg. The CFN, DFN and SFN were present in all specimens dissected; the CFN measured a mean length (mm) of 16.03 and 16.69 on the right and left sides respectively. Bifurcation of the CFN related to the tuberculum of fibula (right; left) - above...

The Morphometry of the Angle of Mandible and its Correlation with Age and Sex in the eThekwini Metropolitan Region: A Panoramic Study International Journal of Morphology
Pillay,S; Ishwarkumar,S; De Gama,B.Z; Pillay,P.
The angle of mandible is formed by the tangent line joining the posterior margin of the ramus and the base of the mandible. The angle of mandible has population-specific characteristics therefore; it is imperative to the field of forensic anthropology for age and sex determination. Literary reports regarding the use of the angle of mandible for age and sex determination vary, as some studies support it, while other studies have documented inefficiencies. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to document the morphometry of the angle of mandible and to determine if a correlation between the angle of mandible, age and sex exists. Sixty four digital panoramic radiographs (n=128) of individuals between 16-30 years were morphometrically analysed using the...

The Plantar Aponeurosis in Fetuses and Adults: An Aponeurosis or Fascia? International Journal of Morphology
Kalicharan,A; Pillay,P; Rennie,C.O; De Gama,B.Z; Satyapal,K.S.
The plantar aponeurosis (PA), which is a thickened layer of deep fascia located on the plantar surface of the foot, is comprised of three parts. There are differing opinions on its nomenclature since various authors use the terms PA and plantar fascia (PF) interchangeably. In addition, the variable classifications of its parts has led to confusion. In order to assess the nature of the PA, this study documented its morphology. Furthermore, a pilot histological analysis was conducted to examine whether the structure is an aponeurosis or fascia. This study comprised of a morphological analysis of the three parts of the PA by micro- and macro-dissection of 50 fetal and 50 adult cadaveric feet, respectively (total n=100). Furthermore, a pilot histological...
